The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has been a strong supporter of education for many years. In 1752, the LCMS established the first school,
St. Matthew in New York City. At this time, the LCMS operates 1500 early childhood centers, 1000 elementary schools and 100 high schools, which serve over 300,000 children in the United States.
The Lutheran School Association of Anchorage consists of Anchorage Lutheran, Beautiful Savior Lutheran, and Zion Lutheran Churches in Anchorage. The LSAA established Anchor Lutheran School in 1979 and has the honor of being the first Lutheran school in Alaska. At that time, classes were held in Anchorage Lutheran and Zion Lutheran Churches while the Lutheran Center was completed. In 1985, Anchor Lutheran School and Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church moved to its present location at 8100 Arctic Boulevard. In 1988, the Early Childhood Education and Child Watch programs were added. Seventh and Eight grades were added in 1995.
